Background- I work for an auto dealer group and get to drive a used car of my choosing for my daily usage. I travel between all our different locations so good gas mileage is a must. Today I need to park the Focus hatch I've been driving and choose something else. Sometimes I get to drive something fun, but sadly this is not one of those times- we're seriously low right now on stuff that's both fun and fuel efficient.
So looking at gas mileage alone, the two contenders are...
A 2012 Nissan Sentra "Special Edition" 2.0 automatic:
Or a 2011 Hyundai Sonata GLS 2.4 automatic:
The Sentra has a sunroof which is of no use to me (it's 14 F here) but other than that they're both fairly standard in terms of options.
Oppo, which would you choose?

see how special that Nissan really is!

Hyundai. My friend had a Sentra similar to that and it was awful.

I find the Sonata to be far, far less ugly.

Hyundai by a long way.

Hyundai. I haven't driven either of these specific models, but I've driven enough Nissans and Hyundais to tell you that the Hyundai is probably much more fun less boring.

haha my sister-in-law has a Sentra. just burn it.

This isn't really a competition.
Obviously, the Sonata is the winner here.
End of story.

Looks are secondary since I won't actually own the car, but it seems like from a drivability standpoint the Hyundai is standing out.

How Special is the Special Edition ?

I've driven the Sonata a few times now that they are part of the Emerald Aisle fleet. They're perfectly functional. The Nissan probably has a CVT which sucks...unless you have a propensity for motorboats.

The Nissan does have a CVT. The only good thing about CVT's is due to the way they're built they're capable of the same speeds forward and backward. I know this from experience.

Sonata. It's not a bad car.

a friend of mine has an old Sentra Special Edition, and it had an in dash 6 CD changer, an around upgraded audio including a 10 inch sub in the trunk. and a few other things, but those were the reason she bought it. I don't know about his one tho.

Comes in handy when pulling a Rockford.

I think you have an answer: get the Sentra, drive everywhere in reverse.

They wont let you walk? Id go with sonata but either way your going to fall asleep at the wheel. (Dont fall asleep at the wheel)

Anything with a Nissan CVT.

Or a Juke. I don't mind it in the Juke. It sucks in everything else.

I live in rentals and have driven both of these in one guise or another a gajillion times. Sonata is preferable, but neither are the worst things ever . The CVT on the Nissan is obnoxious and the main reason I say that.
If you want to feel a terribly poorly sorted rear suspension take the Sonata to a clover leaf with regularly spaced expansion joints and push a little (not 90%, like 50%). It does a hilariously disconcerting butt wiggle.

IMO....of those two...it's like choosing which piece of shit smells nicer :)
With that being said, Sonata much less uglies.

Definitely the Hyundai.

You still have to walk up to, and away from, it occasionally and I would much rather see the Sonata on the other end of that walk. Either way, good deal, free cars are some of the best cars.

of the two, I'd say to go with the Sonata. Seats are pretty good, as well as fuel economy.

Hyundai all the way. I've driven a Sentra, and they are boring.

I'd probably take the Hyundai, only because I rented a Sentra like that once and it had some of the worst seats I've ever experienced in a modern car. No amount of adjustment led to a comfortable seating position. It's a thoroughly horrid car.
